Today, almost people cannot be separated from smartphone. But, there are dangers lurking from the frequency of playing smartphones, text neck! A bone surgeon noticed an increase in neck and back pain patients. He said that it was related to poor body position during prolonged smartphone use.

Some patients, especially young patients who should not have had neck problems, report having experienced a cervical spine shift. This makes the cervix become out of tune.

“In X-rays, the cervical vertebrae are normally slightly bent backwards. But, because people look down for hours while playing smartphones, the neck becomes
bent forward, “said study co-author Dr. Todd Lanman, spinal neurosurgeon at Cedars, Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, quoted by Cbnews, Monday (04/17/2017).

Furthermore, Dr. Lanman said, neck pain due to too long bowing when using a smartphone, more because of sending SMS or playing social media. Meanwhile, browsing the internet or watching videos through smartphones is less at risk of experiencing neck pain.

In addition, in the research Dr. Lanman explained, when facing straight ahead, the head’s weight becomes approximately 4.5-5.5 kg. However, when you lower your head, the weight of the head that weighs on the neck can be up to 27 kilograms (down 60 degrees).
“Currently children from the age of 8 have become smartphone users, and they are at risk of undergoing surgery at the age of 28,” Lanman said.
“In children who are in their infancy, we are not sure this (smartphone use) does not change bone anatomy,” he added.
Therefore, Dr. Lanman suggested a simple lifestyle change to reduce the risk of text neck. Dr. Lanman recommends using a smartphone in front of a face or too close to the eye when texting.
