HARD MATTRESS VS SOFT MATTRESS, WHERE IS BETTER FOR THE BODY?
According to Arya Nick Shamie, MD., Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Neurosurgery from Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, California, United States, mattresses should be a supporter of a person’s natural body position. Curvature of the spine, position of the head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels should have a position that is aligned when you sleep. Then actually, which type of mattress supports the body’s natural position? Is the mattress soft or hard?
Soft mattress
Reporting from the site Bewelbuzz.com, researchers from Spain studied 313 participants to replace their mattresses. As many as 50% of participants used a mattress with a softness of 2.3 out of 10 (medium hard), while the rest used a mattress with a softness of 5.6 out of 10 (medium soft). They also use the mattress for 90 days. As a result, 80% of participants using medium-hard beds actually experience back pain, while only 70% of medium-soft mattress users experience back pain.
Not only that, judging from the discomfort in going through the day, as many as 50% of those who slept on medium-hard mattresses turned out to feel uncomfortable, while only 30% of those who slept on medium-soft mattresses felt discomfort. Then is the mattress soft better?
“If it’s too soft, those pressure points won’t be properly supported, so your whole body flops back,” said Arya Nick Shamie, MD. Indeed, at a glance you must imagine the comfort of sleeping on a very soft mattress. In fact, the mattress is too soft to make the position of the backbone becomes unnatural, because it is too ‘sinking’ in the mattress.
When this happens, the lungs are unable to get large amounts of oxygen. It can prevent you from getting good sleep. Not only that, the position of the spine that is not comfortable can also cause prolonged spinal pain.
Hard mattress
Many say if in fact, hard mattresses are the best. In fact, many people in ancient times had better health conditions because they slept on cots – wooden mattresses. There are also many researchers who have concluded that the smaller the level of bed mattress, the better the mattress in forming natural bone position.
The hardness of the mattress can also press certain points on the bone so that they are in their proper position. This makes the muscles, arteries, and veins more relaxed. As a result, blood circulation will increase and this helps you to sleep better. Another advantage of sleeping on a hard mattress is preventing back pain due to the position of the bones that don’t “sink” in the mattress. This makes the lungs get better oxygen intake. However, that does not mean sleeping on a couch like ancient people did as a recommendation for you,
“If the mattress is too firm, it will push on those main pressure points and take you out of alignment,” explained Arya Nick Shamie, MD. A mattress that is too hard will exert excessive pressure on your bones, so that it comes out of harmony. Same with too soft mattresses, this can also interfere with blood circulation and the volume of oxygen in the body.
The above explanation shows that medium firm mattresses are the best for your health condition
