CORRELATION BETWEEN SMOKING & BACK PAIN
What is the relationship between smoking and back pain?
1. Smoking constricts blood vessels resulting in reduced blood flow, oxygen and nutrients to the lower backbone. This can damage the spinal discs.
2. Smoking accelerates the aging process of spinal discs by reducing the flow and absorption of oxygen and nutrients. This decrease in oxygen and nutrient flow can reach 50%. When the spinal disc is malnourished, the outside of the disc can weaken and cause the disc to shift and cause pain.
3. Nutritional deficiencies in the spine due to smoking can slow the healing process of pain, prolong pain in patients with back injuries, broken bones and patients who have recently undergone spinal surgery.
4. Heavy smokers can suffer from chronic coughing which adds pressure to the spinal discs and this causes back pain.
