According to O’Cornell, there is evidence to explain the relationship between damage to the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain, the brain stem and the upper spine. This condition, known as neurovascular injury, is usually relieved by massaging the neck.

The initial study of manipulation or neck mobilization trials completed therapy only gave a short-term delay. The latest free trial has agreed that massage is no better than intervention than others.

“The potential for harm and not having clear advantages of ‘dicretek’ leads to inevitable conclusions as spinal manipulation must be taken as part of conservative treatment for neck injuries,” added Mr O’Cornell.

Professor David Cassidy from the University of Toronto and his colleagues disagree with O’Cornell’s team. Cassidy said that neck manipulation is an additional therapy that is useful for patient care and must continue to be done.

Cassidy and his team admit to having claims that “clearly show the benefits of neck manipulation in neck pain patients”. This team also doubts to be approved directly between ‘dicretek’ with a stroke.

When combined with the results of the latest trial, “This evidence supports that neck manipulation can be included as an alternative for treatment of neck, as well as other interventions such as staying active and exercising,” he said.

Nonetheless, Cassidy’s team also considered the problem of risk, patient benefits and preferences or “now there are no first-line therapies that require all patients and there is no evidence of safer or more effective mobilization from manipulation”.

“We are asking for help leaving the method of neck manipulation, but we still need further research to find out the benefits and harms of ‘dicretek’ and other common complications to deal with the neck,” he concluded.
